OVERT

January 26, 2017
Inspired by the ever-evolving essence of NYC and girls-on-the-go, OVERT is a brand that cultivates authentic connection and conversation between real modern women through their "OVERT City Girls" community. We chatted with them about building their badass brand and how empowering each other has been a major key to their success.
What is your hometown?
SARAH: Adelaide, South Australia
LAUREN: Melbourne, Australia
What brought you two together?
LAUREN: We were introduced through a mutual friend in NYC, and met over a coffee. A blind date!
How did you know the other was “the one”?
SARAH: As we continued to hang out the flow of creative ideas and exciting projects we would talk about to “do some day” were never ending. I love our combined energy, our creative minds together is where the magic really happens.
What advice could you give on working closely with a friend and balancing a personal and professional relationship?
SARAH: Make time. We have tried multiple ways to do this, and it’s hard, but it’s so important. Making time to be friends and not just business partners. Take time out to talk about things away from the business and ask “how are you?”.
What are the biggest challenges of being your own boss and how does your partner-in-crime help you?
LAUREN: Time management! I’ve always struggled a bit with managing my time. I think being your own boss makes that especially hard. Sarah has shown me how important it is to write things down. Make lists and check them off. It seems so simple, but I’ve never been a note taker… That’s about to change!
How do you motivate each other?
LAUREN: It’s impossible to stay motivated ALL the time, I think one of us is always a little more motivated than the other, we often laugh about it. “Whose turn is it for a pep talk?!”. For me, positivity is the number one motivator, and Sarah is such a positive person, so it’s easy to stay on track when working next to her.
What do you think is better about the female bond that doesn’t come from doing the hustle alone?
SARAH: Getting out of your head!!! Girls think a lot, and often over-analyze, most especially when we can’t talk it out. We both benefit from talking it out–whatever it is–every time.
When do you feel most empowered?
LAUREN: When my mind is clear, I’m focused on a goal and I make it happen.
Where do you go in NYC to unwind?
LAUREN: A dark movie cinema, jazz club, yoga studio, or big open park.
SARAH: My yoga mat, the sofa and upstate. In a house with friends around a big dinner table after cooking all afternoon is one of my most favorite things.
What’s your biggest guilty pleasure (life’s all about balance after all!)?
LAUREN: Wine and chocolate… lots of it.
How are you #livingLIVELY?
SARAH: Kick-ass women in the city, doing great things and their serious power. It’s something that has been built into the OVERT ethos since day 1 and I think by building the OVERT community and bringing together all these incredible women in the city, we are #livingLIVELY together.
