When they couldn’t find products on the market that they could put on their bodies that reflected the quality and care they put into their bodies, major go-getters Christie Bullock and Carrington Snyder, took matters into their own hands. Kayo Better Body Care was born and the rest is luxe beauty history. We chatted with them about building their badass brand and how empowering each other has been a major key to their success.
What is your hometown?
CHRISTINE: Hermosa Beach, California
CARRINGTON: Malibu, Ca
What brought you two together? How did you know the other was “the one”?
CHRISTINE: CJ and I met through our husbands who are both lawyers! I had no idea that CJ’s family worked in the beauty business until she approached me about a partnership. We were so excited that we met the next day to talk business, signed a contract and began. We both excel at creative design, development, and speaking, but we are able to balance each others weaknesses. It’s a perfect ying and yang.
What advice could you give on working closely with a friend and balancing a personal and professional relationship?
CARRINGTON: Define roles and expectations early on. People get wrapped up in the excitement of building a company in the beginning and forget to define the basic roles. Make sure to pick someone you like and like to work with! I adore Christine, & thank goodness I do since I talk to her every single day.
What are the biggest challenges of being your own boss and how does your partner-in-crime help you?
CHRISTINE: I find the biggest challenge of being your own boss is that you enjoy your job so much that it is hard to “turn-off” and just relax. Carrington and I split responsibilities daily and the opposite one will pick up responsibilities when the other needs a little time off.
You have to take the time to listen to your partner's ideas and needs daily. Like any relationship, communication is key.
What’s the best advice you’ve gotten from the other?
CARRINGTON: Not advice, but support. When I took the leap to leave my day job and work on Kayo full time, I got a delivery of flowers from Christine saying “thank you for putting so much trust into me and what we are building.” It’s those little things that help you keep moving forward and working so hard.
What is your process when approaching your creative work?
CHRISTINE: I need to do my research first then I set everything else aside, close my computer so I can’t see emails. Then I meditate and allow the creative to come to me.
When do you feel most empowered?
CARRINGTON: This might sound so little, but I love it when we get a customer out of the blue telling us how much they love our products. People usually only contact retailers when they are upset about something, but there are a few beautiful people who will email with the positive.
What’s your biggest guilty pleasure (life’s all about balance after all!)?
CARRINGTON: I LOVE walking my white German Shepherd. On the weekends, we will leave and not come back home for hours. It is my time to think, reflect and plan.
How are you #livingLIVELY?
CHRISTINE: I’m living out my dreams. I get to speak with and learn from talented people from all around the world daily. I’ve befriended so many other amazing women entrepreneurs I get to call friends.
