United by their diverse backgrounds and badass approach to style and business, Sophie and Bouchra launched AUrate in 2014. AUrate re-writes the rules by offering quality products at an honest price & empowering our community to give back to the world. We chatted with them about building their cool-girl brand and how empowering each other has been a major key to their success.
What is your hometown?
What brought you two together?
BOUCHRA & SOPHIE: Our Masters in Finance
How did you know the other was “the one”?
BOUCHRA & SOPHIE: Our program was mostly men, so we were both delighted to see another female! And then even more once we discovered our mutual interests.
What advice could you give on working closely with a friend and balancing a personal and professional relationship?
BOUCHRA & SOPHIE: Make sure you carve out time for both the personal and the professional. And before you start working together, make sure you really know each other. Most importantly, always keep communicating, openly and directly.
What’s the best advice you’ve gotten from the other?
BOUCHRA & SOPHIE: We have a joint motto “Just do it” that we live by together and always remind each other of. It got us through the first year of AUrate when everything is especially insecure and you just have to make some choices and move forward.
What are the biggest challenges of being your own boss and how does your partner-in-crime help you?
BOUCHRA & SOPHIE: It can be lonely to not have a mentor or boss – all the decisions are up to you. So having a partner in crime to share the burden with is priceless.
[Living by the motto] ‘Just do it’ got us through our first year — make a choice and move forward!
What inspires you about your friend?
BOUCHRA: Sophie has a very natural sense of empathy and really cares about people; plus she has a huge sense of perseverance.
SOPHIE: Bouchra is able to be really strong and honest (and tough when needed) in her communication while at the same time coming across as kind and friendly–-she is one of the few people I know who can manage this balance effectively.
