October 11, 2017
Here at LIVELY, we’re constantly surrounded by swoon-worthy women that are killin’ it in their businesses. We're launching #WomenCrushWednesday to celebrate the boss babes who provide us with a constant flow of inspiration, support, and endless girl-crushes.
Up next, Lolli Swim Founder and Designer, Vy Nguyen
What inspired you to start Lolli Swim?
I’ve always been obsessed with swimmies and all the FUN around it. When I started, there wasn’t really any novelty swimmies out there— so it was the perfect time! At the time, I was struggling to find a traditional or “normal” job, so it was just the sign I needed to go for it. The bow on the booty was my first silhouette for Lolli because I don’t have a booty lol. I wanted to add a lil’ something. It’s still one of our most popular designs.
What is your process when approaching your creative work?
It strangely just comes to me. I LOVE to travel, so most of my ideas and themes come from my travels or nostalgia from my childhood. Usually, I become OBSESSED with a theme and then dive in from there. Going to a dreamy place is always a great start!
What do you love most about your job?
I LOVE making people smile and taking them back to a fun memory. From a swimmie print or songs we play at our runway shows— it’s all about finding that happy place <3. Now that Lolli has more categories (t-shirts, accessories, and soon to be more!) we’re able to bring our playful side to life.
What’s your biggest guilty pleasure (life’s all about balance after all!)?
I LOVE to eat yummmmmmy sweets! Besides ice cream and cake, I’d have to say binge watching TV is a huge guilty pleasure of mine. I order in, have a few drinks and watch a full season.
What’s one piece of advice that you would give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
Don’t give up and follow your gut. This may sound simple, but it’s so easy to feel swayed by others once you get started in a business. People will tell you what they think you should do to be successful. While advice is great, always listen to that voice inside you— she knows what’s best. Also, know that feeling tired or stressed is normal, especially in the beginning of a startup! When you think you just can’t do it anymore, take a breather and go back at it. You’ll be surprised how much energy you have when you really are passionate about your work. Have good energy and be fearless. You have to make your dreams a reality. You have to take risks to be an entrepreneur and not be afraid to do so.
How would you describe your personal aesthetic?
Hmmm I don’t know about this one. I wouldn’t say I personally have a specific aesthetic. I have to be comfy and I love stripes, dots and color lol. Anything with a little FUN works for me!
What are 3 things you can’t leave the house without?
My phone, Tata Harper Popular lip/cheek tint and something sweet… either pink starburst or candy of some kind.
How are you #livingLIVELY?
Being a girl boss, an entrepreneur and just living in the world we are in today. I’m #livingLIVELY but not following any rules. I am loving my job and the people I surround myself with, and truly living with the intentions to be HAPPY, make others HAPPY and have FUN! Life is too short to do anything otherwise <3
